Summary

The sequel to the phenomenal bestseller, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, this is John Boyne's latest novel for adults。

1946。 Three years after a cataclysmic event which tore their lives apart, a mother and daughter flee Poland for Paris, shame, and fear at their heels, not knowing how hard it is to escape your past。

Nearly eighty years later, Gretel Fernsby lives a life that is a far cry from her traumatic childhood。 When a couple moves into the flat below her in her London mansion block, it should be nothing more than a momentary inconvenience。 However, the appearance of their nine-year-old son Henry brings back memories she would rather forget。

Faced with a choice between her own safety and his, Gretel is taken back to a similar crossroads she encountered long ago。 Back then, her complicity dishonoured her life, but to interfere now could risk revealing the secrets she has spent a lifetime protecting。

From John Boyne's author's note:"Writing about the Holocaust is a fraught business and any novelist approaching it takes on an enormous burden of responsibility。 Not the burden of education, which is the task of non-fiction, but the burden of exploring emotional truths and authentic human experiences while remembering that the story of every person who died in the Holocaust is one that is worth telling。For all the mistakes in her life, for all her complicity in evil, and for all her regrets, I b From John Boyne's author's note:"Writing about the Holocaust is a fraught business and any novelist approaching it takes on an enormous burden of responsibility。 Not the burden of education, which is the task of non-fiction, but the burden of exploring emotional truths and authentic human experiences while remembering that the story of every person who died in the Holocaust is one that is worth telling。For all the mistakes in her life, for all her complicity in evil, and for all her regrets, I believe that Gretel's story is also worth telling。It is up to the reader to decide whether it is worth telling。"I'll not only endorse those comments but say to Mr。 Boyne thank you for writing this absorbing novel。 Rarely am I so involved in such vivid story telling as this excellent novel illustrates in telling of Gretel's checkered ninety-odd years of life。I have not read the earlier novel or seen the film version of "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" which traced Greta and her brother Bruno as the children of the Nazi commandant in charge of life and death at (presumably) Auschwitz during World War II。 This has no effect on the originality and scope of "All the Broken Places" - a very much stand-alone novel。Written in relatively short chapters which constantly move from Gretel's current life as a wealthy widow living in a posh Mayfair mansion block in London, to her young years as witness (and silent collaborator) to the horrors of "that other place"; the attempt to reinvent herself in post-war Paris with devastating consequences, to a brief new life on the other side of the world in Sydney and finally back to an up and down life in London。The novel is not perfect。 There are a few gaps and a certain amount of implausibility in some of the events in Gretel's complicated life but the power of the storytelling of a fascinating individual sweeps away most of these reservations。 It's not a crime mystery in the true sense but a gripping, page-turning thriller。 Wouldn't say I felt a great warmth towards Gretel, but I certainly wanted to know what made her "click" and what would happen next as she relates her turbulent life。Coming off the brilliant "The Heart's Invisible Furies" (ranks as one the best novels I've read) and the almost as brilliant "A Ladder to the Sky," this one completed a hat-trick of great John Boyne novels for this reader。My rating is an enthusiastic 4。5+ which I rounded out to a 5/5。 。。。more

What a book! Hard to put feelings into words regarding this book, but I think that’s the point of this story! Everyone should read this and contemplate the unimaginable。 None of us can say for sure how we would or could respond to such a situation because we’ve never been there。 We weren’t raised in those homes under those circumstances。 I am curious how she came into her fortune, though, as I cannot reconcile her wealth。

ALL THE BROKEN PLACES is a riveting, mesmerizing, authentic historical fiction novel。 The story line is true to the shameful, heartbreaking events it contains。 John Boyne uses the tragic nature of the holocaust to unveil the emotional life story of characters involved。 To quote Amy Bloom: 'This book moves like a freight train, with force and consequences for the reader'。 ALL THE BROKEN PLACES is a riveting, mesmerizing, authentic historical fiction novel。 The story line is true to the shameful, heartbreaking events it contains。 John Boyne uses the tragic nature of the holocaust to unveil the emotional life story of characters involved。 To quote Amy Bloom: 'This book moves like a freight train, with force and consequences for the reader'。 。。。more

Ninety-one-year-old Gretel Fernsby has lived in the same well-to-do mansion block in London for decades。 She lives a quiet, comfortable life, despite her deeply disturbing, dark past。 She doesn't talk about her escape from Nazi Germany at age 12。 She doesn't talk about the grim post-war years in France with her mother。 Most of all, she doesn't talk about her father, who was the commandant of one of the Reich's most notorious extermination camps。 Ninety-one-year-old Gretel Fernsby has lived in the same well-to-do mansion block in London for decades。 She lives a quiet, comfortable life, despite her deeply disturbing, dark past。 She doesn't talk about her escape from Nazi Germany at age 12。 She doesn't talk about the grim post-war years in France with her mother。 Most of all, she doesn't talk about her father, who was the commandant of one of the Reich's most notorious extermination camps。 。。。more

A beautifully written sequel to The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas。 A story of love, hate, shame and bravery portrayed by the amazing character of Gretel, the older sister of the Boy in the Striped Pyjamas Not what I expected, the ending brought me to tears。

A stunning follow up to The Boy in the Striped Pajamas。 At times it was hard to know whether to pity, hate or even admire this complex woman whose childhood cast such a dark shadow over her life。 In my opinion, it is a very good read and would make for great discussion。

We can choose our friends, but we cannot choose our family。 Very significant life story of Gretel, and very satisfying conclusion。 Didn't realize the tie-in to Boy in the Striped Pajamas until well into the story。 Recommend! Brilliant。 Mesmerizing。 Haunting。John Boyne is one of the best contemporary authors around。 In All the Broken Pieces, he explores the theme of guilt and culpability: To what extent is one culpable for standing by and silently witnessing inhumanity, even as a child? “I have less interest in the monsters,” he explains in the afterword, “than I do in the people who knew what the monsters were doing and deliberately looked away。”This book not a light read。 But it is riveting, and will stay with you。 Brilliant。 Mesmerizing。 Haunting。John Boyne is one of the best contemporary authors around。 In All the Broken Pieces, he explores the theme of guilt and culpability: To what extent is one culpable for standing by and silently witnessing inhumanity, even as a child? “I have less interest in the monsters,” he explains in the afterword, “than I do in the people who knew what the monsters were doing and deliberately looked away。”This book not a light read。 But it is riveting, and will stay with you。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

As an AI language model, I do not have personal preferences for books。 However, "Quan el món es va trencar" is a Catalan book written by Jordi Roura i Torras。 It tells the story of a family struggling to survive after a global catastrophe that has destroyed much of the world's infrastructure。 It is a post-apocalyptic novel that explores themes such as human relationships, survival, and hope。 If you are interested in the genre, it might be worth checking out。
